  1. The American Heritage Dictionary is a dictionary of an excellent book, with the last words, beautifully designed, beautiful, and more than 2,000 pages in all aspects of English. I compare this dictionary with the New Oxford American Dictionary (Noad) because these are the two best one-volume English dictionaries available.

In my opinion, is clearly a better dictionary Noad for the reasons listed below. In general, Noad entries are longer and more detailed, hence the reader has more information. The American Heritage definitions are almost too concise (usually too short for my taste), but many prefer the shorter definitions. Each dictionary will at least know the words (and even some common words) dictionary has no other (especially scientific words, geographical locations, and the words later), so a dictionary is not superior, as well as a number significant voices. I think the Noad has several entries, but if not, is still a better dictionary.

Some comparisons of American Heritage Dictionary (2006), Noad (New Oxford American Dictionary) (2004)

“The American Heritage 2006 pages A to Z, is Noad 1959 pages A to Z. The American Heritage were not included in any place he can see the number of entries you have. The Noad says it has more than 250,000 entries. The character of the American heritage is smaller, but equally easy to read as Noad from the source. The Noad uses 3 columns per page, the American Heritage uses 2.

“The heritage of America has some words are not in the latest state of Noad as Red, Blue State, Sudoku, Texas Hold’em, but not the idea though this makes it better Noad. Here are some of the words (some relatively recent) is that the U.S. Noad has no assets: MacAran (dance) Tamagotchi (Japanese toy), October Surprise, Hamas (the Palestinian militant group), heat-seeking (such as a missile) tart Tatin, solid south, spaceship Earth.

-American Heritage is visually more appealing with its 4. 000 images in full color with a nice layout design. Although Noad It lacks color, has many effective illustrations, and even entire pages devoted to maps.

“A great advantage of the American heritage is that data from some interesting etymological histories of about 400 common words. For example, the American Heritage dictionary gives a history of 13 lines on the word Kangaroo, explaining that this is not an aborigine means “do not know”, and then proceeds to explain the true history of the word. The American Heritage also has usage notes on over 750 synonyms, 100 notes on regionalism, 500 notes on employment issues, and 50 notes on the social dimension of certain words.

“Although Noad not give these selected, interesting word histories, overall the etymology Noad has done much better than the etymology of the American heritage. Noad etymological explanations are more detailed, and often an image is added when the word came into use, e. g. early 17th century (though not give specific years), which the American Heritage is not. The Noad will give folk etymology of certain words, and how the American Heritage notes on the proper use and will help the reader / writer to use the right word with synonyms.

“One of the advantages Noad has over the huge American Heritage is that it incorporates many, many sources of the most common words associated with the sentence with a word, such as proverbs, clichés, etc. For example, the word “cake” N. The Noad will list the phrases “easy as pie sweet as pie”, “a piece of cake” and “castles in the air” (and giving definitions of each phrase), while the only American Heritage lists and defines “castles in the air.” The Noad will also give the origin of certain phrases such as “watered down” (the failure of gunpowder to fire a gun correctly.) The American Heritage does none of this with its phrases, but keep in mind that the American Heritage Dictionary publish a book on word origins separate sentence, which is probably why little emphasis on them in its main dictionary.

“The Noad biographical entries is higher in American Heritage. Each dictionary will have some other people do not know, but when they are similar, Noad almost always gives more information in a biographical entry. Noad This is even beyond the geographical entries. food shipments, and political level. Noad income is also understood better than normally found in an encyclopedia, as Tamil Tigers, Hammond, Abby Road are Noad, but not in American Heritage.

“The Noad is slightly better to give information about the nations of the world. The American Heritage entries on nations is short and simple, while Noad, but not for long, yet will give a better history of a country that the American heritage.

I love dictionaries, and comparison of these two dictionaries, Noad for me has its momentum throughout American English Heritage. The American Heritage Dictionary still very good choice, but if I could have only one, it would Noad. If you love words, you should get, is to enjoy the variety each provides.

  2. Myth Man says:

Last fall I was sitting on a course of negotiations at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and the professor (and fellow extraordinarily creative free thinking) We recommend students to purchase this particular etymological dictionary because it often provides information about the words more definitions. I have many etymological dictionaries, but it is good to have the definition and a brief note in the etymological dictionary itself. This is a kind of dictionary design and would be an ideal choice for any college student or post-graduate. The words are – my around 30 or 40 different dictionaries (including the Oxford English Dictionary), so I have a basis for comparison. I am enjoying the American Heritage Dictionary, and I hope that if you buy one, you will enjoy it a lot.

  3. The new design, color, enhanced by 4,000 photographs, drawings, maps and in the 4th edition of the dictionary of this kind are really first and a clear improvement of the reception. As always, of course, the definitions are clear and understandable, with the most current or central meaning of the first – and etymologies are excellent. My third edition went to his house beside the chair where I read, and the fourth is now placed on my desk, where it is used daily. “New and Improved” is usually no more than a cliché when applied to most products, but the 4th edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English language is actually both.

  4. The best of this dictionary is that the definitions are quick to read when needed. The multi-color makes it easy for the eyes to read the page and discern the words and notes, by definition, is not only a clear white page with black type.

The downside, if you are in no hurry, it is very easy to get distracted by beautiful color illustrations. Very often I’ll find a word and I’m seeing other items per hour. It has a substantial weight to it and a very interesting presentation. If you use another typical vocabulary could also use an online or software based on source code, but the American heritage as they have a copy, totally worth it.

  5. The first edition of this dictionary was that my grandmother gave me. I find it more readable and complete for its size of any dictionary I used. I bought new editions including the fourth is for my children and I, although the reference is still my first night.
